The Spider Web
It was afternoon class. Even before lunch, it was a hard task staying awake.
I was desperately trying to keep up my consciousness against the overwhelming sleepiness that was enveloping me, slowly but in huge waves. Trying to balance both I transcended into a dreamy state.
It was a pleasure. The walls of my classroom slowly cracked, the fans fell, tables toppled, lights burst and the annoying board shattered. It felt good to see the room gradually crumbling away bit by bit. The falling rubble seemed like rain after a long drought.
Then suddenly something caught my eye in the raining rubble. Something bright and beautiful. I focused myself into reality and found a butterfly fluttering about, through the window. It seemed what I was not. Happy and free. Maybe that was why it was bright and beautiful.
The carefree creature was too carefree. It ended up getting caught in a spider’s web. I don’t know why, but I didn’t feel any sympathy for the struggling creature. Rather, I remember smiling to myself, searching for the lucky spider.
Sudden silence. All eyes on me. I just realized that my professor was staring at me. I stared back at him, blankly. He walked up to me, took my empty note, threw it away and asked me to get out.
Obediently, I left the class with my bag, picking up the book on the way. Just as I left the class, I turned back to have one last look at the web. And you know what, I found the spider. It was all along there. I just wasn’t looking.
